I Woke Up Like This: My Go-To Make-Up Products

Posted In: Beauty

I get asked a lot about which make-up products I use—usually whenever I show up at brunch with last night’s face completely intact. After years of experimenting, these have been my go-tos for as long as I can remember. My skin is pretty sensitive, so while I’ll experiment with some new products once in awhile, I tend to stick to these tried-and-true ones.

Face

My makeup products

Clockwise from top left: Smashbox primer, bareMinerals foundation, bareMinerals compact, bareMinerals concealer brush, bareMinerals contouring brushes, Nars blush, bareMinerals kabuki brush, Clinique highlighter, bareMinerals luminizer, bareMinerals bronzer.

Product Details

Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer (Available from Sephora or Shoppers Drug Mart)

bareMinerals Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 in Light (Available from Sephora)

bareMinerals Flawless Face Case Portable Compact (Bought from Sephora, but I don’t think they carry it anymore. New version available from Bare Escentuals)

bareMinerals Maximum Coverage Concealer Brush from the Get Started Kit (Bought from Sephora, but I don’t think they carry the same one anymore. Available from Bare Escentuals)

bareMinerals Mini Precision Face Brush and Mini Tapered Face Brush Brushes from the READY To Go Complexion Perfection Palette in Light (Available from Sephora)

Nars Blush in Orgasm (Available from Sephora)

bareMinerals Baby Buki Brush from the Flawless Face Case Portable Compact (See above. I think I kept this brush from a compact I had before, which broke)

Clinique Chubby Stick Sculpting Highlight (Available from Sephora)

bareMinerals READY Luminizer Duo (Available from Sephora. I use the colour on the left side called The Love Affair)

bareMinerals READY Bronzer in The High Dive (Available from Sephora)

Eyes

My eye makeup products

Clockwise from top left: Anastasia brow pencil, Shu Uemura false eyelashes, Make Up For Ever glue, generic double-ended eyeshadow brush, generic sponge-tipped applicator brush, Sephora eyeliner brush, Essence gel eyeliner, Urban Decay eyeshadow primer, MAC eyeshadow

Product Details

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Pencil in Medium Brown (Available from Sephora)

Shu Uemura False Eyelashes in Smoky Layers (available from Shu Uemura counters inside The Bay or Holt Renfrew, or Sephora. I used to buy mine from Sephora, but now they’re sold out a lot of the time. Plus, I’m pretty picky about them, and I find the ones from the Shu Uemura counters are better quality. Sometimes the spacing can be wonky with the Sephora ones.)

Make Up For Ever Eyelash Glue (Available from Sephora. I actually used to use MUFE’s false eyelashes in 156: Genevieve, but the quality started deteriorating and now they look nothing like the ones they used to make. However, I swear by their glue—they’ve kept my lashes on even through high-speed boat rides with wind and water bombarding my face. Tip: Certain styles come with a larger tube of glue for the same price.)

Double-Ended Eyeshadow Brush and Sponge-Tipped Applicator Brush (Can’t remember where I got these, but shouldn’t be too hard to find at most drugstores or at Sephora!)

Sephora Classic Precision Liner Brush #92 (Available from Sephora)

Essence Gel Eyeliner in 01: Midnight in Paris (Available from Shoppers Drug Mart. For the longest time, the Stila Smudge Pot in Jet Black was my go-to gel liner. However, when I was working abroad and ended up extending my stay, I ran out of it. I picked up the only comparable product I could find at a local convenience store: Catrice Gel Eye Liner in 010: Black Jack with Jack Black. This stuff was amazing. An issue with the Stila liner was that it tended to dry out really quickly, and the Catrice liner stayed usable for about 3-5x longer. However, you can’t find it outside of certain countries in Europe…and apparently it’s now been discontinued. When mine finally ran out, I did a little sleuthing and Essence is by the same parent company as Catrice. So far, it dries out quicker than the Catrice version, but has the same staying power. I would say that the Essence Gel Eyeliner and Stila Smudge Pot are on about the same footing, in terms of good staying power and average shelf life.)

Urban Decay Anti-Aging Eyeshadow Primer Potion (Available from Sephora. I don’t have any particular preference for the anti-aging qualities haha, I usually just tend to buy the mini version instead of the full-size product, and the last few times they didn’t have the Original version of the mini size.)

MAC Eye Shadow in Slate (Now discontinued, apparently…and mine is running out soon. Looks like I’m going to have to go looking for a replacement haha.)

Lips

Lip balm and lip gloss

From top to bottom: Maybelline lip balm, Smashbox lip gloss.

Product Details

Maybelline Baby Lips Dr. Rescue Lip Balm in Too Cool (Available from most drugstores)

Smashbox Be Legendary Lip Gloss in Pout (Available from Sephora)

So there you have it! That’s everything I use for my immovable party-proof and sleep-proof look.

As you can see, it’s pretty lax since I don’t like taking too long to get ready. It’s not pro by any means—there’s a lot of products and brushes I don’t use. I did pick up some more advanced brow products over the holidays I’ll be trying soon though, and I’d like to experiment with some concealer and other lip products when I get a chance.

When I get some time, I also want to do a full video tutorial of my usual make-up process! Until then, enjoy, and feel free to ask me any questions about the list above.
